Quick post. So I started job #2 yesterday -- in case I didn't mention it before, I'm going to be filling an administrative clerk position at the local community college while another employee is out on extended sick leave. There wasn't a lot I could do on my first day, what with me not having the requisite keys and computer passwords to do what I'll eventually be doing, so I was mostly running errands and xeroxing forms and whatnot. It's a fulltime position (temporary, though, so no benefits), and with me keeping the bookstore job, for at least the next month I'll be working seven days a week. That is, I'm going to be swamped, but hopefully I'll find time to update Scary-Crayon at least once a week. As always, though I'll shoot for two updates.

Anyway, with the time spent riding the bus to and from the job, and a bit of downtime that I had, I read all but the last 20-30 pages of Ira Levin's The Stepford Wives. (I would've been reading Caren Lissner's Carrie Pilby, but I really don't want to see that one lost and/or damaged, so I mostly keep that one in the house.) It's a pretty interesting read, but I'll save the commentary for after I've finished it.

And also today, during a bit of time when I couldn't leave the vicinity of "my" office because I don't have a key and can't lock the door (there's stuff in there that people may or may not want to steal), in addition to reading the book I strolled out into the hallway and attempted to chat with some of the students. See, I'm going to be working with the student government services, and outside the offices is a common area where students hang out. So I approached a group of five or six guys playing Magic: The Gathering (nerdy wizard card game) and asked what went on out there. Of course I knew -- they just sort of hang out out there -- but I thought it would be good to make casual conversation with some of the students, since I'll mostly be interacting with them once the job gets into full swing.

Upon my speaking to them, one of the guys looked up at me, looked to his friends, and said, "Can we trust him?"

They glanced at each another, and then another member of the group looked up at me and said, "Do we know you?"

"No," I said, and I introduced myself and told them I was going to be the new admin clerk for a while.

"Ah," said another one, "he's with the administration!"

"He's one of them!" cried another.

"We'd better not talk to him," said yet another.

And they began actively ignoring me and went back to playing Magic.

Uh-huh. Ja.
