Coming soon to the NYC area...
Category: Miscellany

So I'm doing a little better now. I've informed the supervisors that I'll be turning in my notice by the end of the week, so the end is in sight. I've started looking for apartments in the NYC area, too -- hoping to make the move in early Sept. (That is very soon!) Any advice from some of you already living there? (Or apartment hunting tips in general?) And what do you think of apartment search services with fees? There are some great listings on Rentwave.com, but to get at them one has to pay a $40 membership fee. What do you think?

Also, are there any particularly cost-effective areas that you'd care to recommend? (I'm looking to spend $800 max per month, although, naturally, less is more. 😉 1 bedroom preferred, but a nice studio would be cool too!) Brooklyn and Harlem don't seem to be too bad, and I could always commute from NJ.

Your suggestions/advice will be greatly appreciated!

To begin, avoid fees if you can. There is probably a catch that you're unaware of that would prevent you from renting (like, it's already under contract to someone else).

You'll probably have to make a 1 month deposit, wherever you go. Keep in mind that Phil's apartment (if memory serves) is about $1000 per month and that's about a half-hour commute from Manhattan.

I honestly don't know where you could find a one-bedroom for $800 per month. Maybe in Jersey City Heights? For NJ, there are local listings at http://www.hudsonreporter.com. You could also look at realtor.com.

That's my two cents, for now.

Good luck Wes. I know nothing about Manhattan real estate so I don't have any advice. We have renter services like the one you mentioned out here in LA and many people use them with great results. I liked my service a lot, but that's not to say it's the same in NYC.

  • Wes says:

Did yours charge a fee, Tamara? And if so, do you feel it was worth it?

  • Lori says:

Wow. Congrats on the decision Wes! You'll be able to find something, but it might be tight for that price, have you thought about finding a roommate? I envy you, I've been having itchy feet lately (meaning the need for change) but no real reason to change anything.

  • Becky says:

I have to agree with Lori in that you may be better off finding something with a roommate at $800/month. Craig's List can be a good place to start, even with a roommate search. They have options to include those with broker fees and those without. I'm glad you decided to go for it -- I think you will be happier, even if it's a little awkward at first. I hope you're up there by the second weekend!

  • Lori says:

Yeah, I've lived with 2 different people that I'd never met before the roommate "interview." One was kind of a nut, but I didn't really realize that until after I moved. My roomate now is great, though, if you ask the right questions at the interview you can be pretty confident. In contrast, I had a roommte that I knew and i'm conviced she is the reason my class ring and another ring is missing.

  • NJWT says:

Yeah for $800 or less, you're talking Jersey side, Bro.

  • Wes says:

Well maybe I'm missing some extra fees with some of these listings I'm seeing, but there seem to be a number of 1 bedroom apts in Brooklyn and Harlem that could work... but I could also tolerate a studio. Roommates, I'm not sure about! I kinda like my space... had one roommate in college and he actually left the room and took to sleeping in the band room because he was afraid I was going to kill him. (Long story. ;))

Not that I mind Jersey -- as long as I was kinda close to a PATH station, that would be cool too!

  • Greg says:

You already know how to eat cheap, but you'll probably have to hold off on a lot of things for a few months, like DVD binges. A roommate would probably be required if you want any place that's in good condition and actually has space. And, most importantly, prepare for a tough upcoming year or so.

  • Lori says:

Call it a challenge and take it on man! 🙂 We're all rooting for you big time!

  • heg says:

I wish you more luck than you will ever need my friend: The Jersey side looks best to me also. You are a good man Wes, but just as with other skilled artist; the odds are you will crash and burn at least once, in your brave effort to make it to the top. Remember, if you do, it will only be temporary. How you recover and carry yourself will define your true character. While we all unamimously applaud you: There will be those bigots who will resent your presence, do not let their petty jealousies destory your inner spirit. Believe in yourself and you will overcome.

  • Mickey says:

You might want to check out southwestern Fairfield County - Norwalk or Stamford. I know some places are pricey, but you might be able to find something. And there's the MetroNorth up that way, too. Might not be as convenient as Jersey and Path, but it's worth looking into.

Of course, I grew up in Stamford, so I may be a bit biased. And I miss it, too, sometimes. But you knew that, I think. =)

Congrats on the next chapter! You're on your way, bud. I can just feel it!

Oh, and if you land in Stamford/Norwalk, it'd be super easy to get together the next time I go to the right coast.

  • NJWT says:

Stamford is nice, but that's not moving to New York, that's moving to Stamford. It's like an hour train ride.

For $800, you're maybe talking Journal Square in JC, otherwise, that's bus territory.

    Where does Heg live?

  • Mickey says:

You're right, moving to Stamford isn't moving to New York. It was just a suggestion!

  • Sarah says:

Awesome man! Good luck with the apartment hunt. For $800, I'd have to agree with the above comments. Either roomates or Jersey.

  • Phil says:

For $800 you might be able to get a shitty studio in a shitty neighborhood of an outer-borough. Rental prices in NYC are insane. I didn't want a roommate and didn't want a studio either so I had to put off getting a 1-bedroom until I could afford 1 g a month. And that's in an area that's usually 45 minutes from Manhattan (only 30 mins if I'm lucky in connecting to the express trains!).

So my advice is similar to everyone elses : consider a roommate, consider a small studio, consider the outer-outer boroughs or NJ.

  • Tamara says:

Sorry it took so long to answer your question, but yes, they did charge a fee, it was like $40 for a couple of months using their service. But Craig's List is really big out here now, lots of people I know found their apartments on it, or roommates.

  • Wes says:

Guys -- guys! Does the PATH run all night, too? Because I'm looking at Craigslist... and Jersey City could SO work!

  • Tamara says:

    Go here for PATH information.

  • Wes says:

"PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) rapid transit trains provide service between New Jersey and New York City 24 hours per day, seven days per week."

Thank you, dear Tamara! Of course, factoring the cost of the PATH trains into things, that would take my monthly expenses up... but I'd be living in a relatively nice place instead of a grimy studio, which would rule!

  • CL says:

Yes, the PATH runs all night. I have taken it back many times at 3 and 4 a.m. Except, at those times, it's filled with drunk Jerseyans coming back from NY. But it's fine to take. It runs about every half hour in the middle of the night.

There are a ton of new apartments in Hoboken right now, so you should be able to get something good at that price, honestly. http://www.hudsonreporter.com or try googling "hoboken apartments"

  • dave says:

Wes, the PATH is $2 a ride, I think... or $1.50.

Also, I've seen studios in Weehawken for $650 or so, but that's bus territory, and that's not all night long.

Of course, you can always move once you get established and maybe get a better job.

  • Jesus says:

Well the "bootleg" aka immigrant buses, do run all night. So if he lives close to Bergenline Ave or Blvd East in Weehawken, then there are buses all night. That's how I get home at 4AM in the morning, $2 bus back into jersey. Actually that's how I get into and out of NYC everytime, screw NJTransit!

  • Wendy says:

Whoa - I've been behind in my blog reading and it looks as thought I missed out on some big news! Congratulations, Wes! Do you have a job lined up yet? I have always thought you should move to the NYC area. Way to go! And good luck!
