Dawn and The Anonymous Blogger link to an article by Terrence Moore entitled "Heather's Compromise". I don't know why I'm linking it too, since I hardly think it's worth reading, but I wanted to post the comment I left on Anon's blog and I couldn't very well do that without providing some context. So I guess I do know why I'm linking it after all! 😀 Anyway, here's the comment:
From the article: "As the authors of the immensely popular The Rules contend, 'many women we know find it easier to relocate to another state, switch careers, or run a marathon than to get the right man to marry them!'"
*Gasp!* You don't say?!?! That running a distance of 26 miles should be less difficult than finding a partner for life?!?! Shocking!!!
Well, I thought that was a pretty pointless read -- I don't think anything was said in here that was really novel, and the author consistently made assumptions about both "men" and "women" that I don't think it's valid or helpful to make. I read the "Wimps and Barbarians" article too, which suffered from the same problem. It's also worth noting that the author makes reference to certain terms -- the "manliness" of old, for example -- without ever really defining them. I studied Latin; I know that the word "virtue" comes from the Latin for "man", but that's not sufficient to define "manliness". Etc.
At the very least, we've found my "loop" [referring to comments in earlier entries, about me not fitting into any "loops"] -- I'm sure this guy would lump me in with the "wimps". It's certainly not an entirely accurate characterization, but the author doesn't seem to leave room for individuals who don't fit into his narrow categories.
Seriously, someone should hire me to write these kinds of articles -- mine would probably have a lot more substance. (Now where did that resume go...? ^_-)

In other news, I'm going to try to add a commenting feature to the blog. I wouldn't hold me to this if I were you, but expect them to be up by the end of next week. (Though it could happen this weekend.) Wish me luck figuring out this perl crap! There's a bunch of crap I need to be doing for SC as well -- I still need to get those custom error pages made (which would be simple, I think; I just need to do it), and I'm thinking of redesigning the main page, since it's getting kinda "heavy" with all of those images and such. I dunno what I'll do, with it, though. I could keep only the 10 most recent articles on there and add a site search thing so people can find the rest, or I could cut the right column of images and make a links bar or something over there. What'll probably end up happening is some combination of those two options, with maybe a reduction in the font and size of images... but I don't want it to end up looking too much like X-Entertainment's main page. I want to make sure Scary-Crayon is viewed for the most part as Scary-Crayon instead of "that X-E clone" -- which I think is happening with the unique food articles and the poetry focus, not to mention some specific articles, but yeah. Admittedly, though, Matt has a good setup over there.
And I also need to make that personal page, since I still haven't gotten around to doing that. And finish writing some stories! And find a faraway job and get the bloody hell out of here! Argh! Where are you, dear Carmen Sandiego? I need help!
