Quick post before I shove off to bed. First, Scary-Crayon was updated tonight, so if that at all interests you, go have a look. I mention it here because it's a pretty serious piece -- a book review cum sociolinguistic (?) commentary -- and since it's more in the vein of something I'd write here, if you find my observations on Wesoteric to be interesting, you may find that piece to be a worthwhile read as well. And since it's on SC, if you've got comments, I invite you to share them with the class over there.
Secondly, tonight I had a few drinks and watched Spider-Man 2. (I suppose that I actually ventured to pour myself a drink at all is proof that I'm feeling a little better -- physically speaking, I mean.) Spidey 2 is one of two or three movies that, for some reason, I'm always willing to watch and can always sit through and enjoy. I call them "anytime movies".Do you have any films like that? I mean, there are quite a few movies that I like -- and a good number that I like even more than Spidey 2 -- but that I have to be in a certain mood to want to sit through them. I've got to be feeling a particular way to want to sit through a Tim Burton film, for instance, because although the visuals in the movies are fantastic, Burton's weakness is plotting, and, being aware of that, I have to be prepared to endure the tedious parts (or turn the movie off) where they appear. I've got to be in a thoughtful, intellectual mindset to watch Waking Life -- and I've got to maintain that mindset throughout the film or else my mind will wander and the sometimes very animated animation will get to me and I'll get bored or a headache or both. I've got to have a taste for terror to view a horror flick; I've got to be feeling sappy to watch a romantic comedy; I've got to have three or more hours to kill to watch a particularly long movie. I have to be feeling somewhat astute to pop in a subtitled film -- otherwise Bio Zombie would probably make my list of anytime movies. As it is, it's a short list, with Spidey 2 and Monkeybone being the only definite two on there, with Heathers possibly making the cut as well. There may be others in my collection that belong on the list, but I'd have to watch them a few more times to be certain. And theoretically, any film could be dropped from the anytime movie list if even after 100 enjoyable views I watched it once and -- for whatever reason -- wasn't into it. It's all very scientific, you see.
Finally, I've been looking at the site stats and some of the visiting domains -- whoever's visiting from UCLA, drop me a line, hmm? I don't know any people at UCLA. What brought you?
Ja ne, minna-san.
