R.I.P. DVDSpot
Category: Linkage … TV, Film, & DVDs

I used to have my DVD collection listed at DVDSpot. It was great! Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, DVDSpot shut down this week. This development made me very sad. 🙁

Anyway, I've since taken to listing my DVD collection at Chasing the Frog, but because that site lacks an option for me to import my old collection I'm currently in the process of manually adding every. single. entry. to the list. (I'm in no hurry, so I'm doing like a handful whenever it occurs to me to add some more. I imagine I'll be finished by February 2009.) Being hosted by Amazon, the database also lacks entries for some of the more obscure foreign titles. Ah well.

My (now outdated) collection is still up with DVD Profiler, though I haven't used that since they started charging money in order to use the full functionality of the program. Maybe someday I'll feel like it's worth the $30 so that everyone can see precisely which DVDs I own, but that day has not come yet. By the time it arrives, they'll probably want $60 for the service. 😛

I think I'm going to list my collection at Chasing the Frog. I've been meaning to be more organized about my DVDs -- I often loan them to people and then forget about it until I'm in the mood to watch something and I can't find it.

And there you go, or as some would say, "And Bob's yer uncle." So much for that; I hadn't even looked at my account for some months and although it was time consuming to even list the little I did, I won't miss it. I like to guess at what DVDs I have, anyhow. =)

Sarah: You often loan your DVDs to people? Gasp! I could see loaning some of my titles to others, but I can almost guarantee that it would be an exceedingly rare occurrence. 😉

But yeah, Chasing the Frog is okay if most of your titles are popular and you don't have any obscure versions (though I guess that wouldn't necessarily be a problem for your purposes, since all you'd really need is a reminder). I like to include the specific version of the film that I have, but there are even some fairly well-known flicks -- like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and some foreign films that have since gotten "official" US releases -- for which my version isn't in their database. Sadness.

Mick: Guessing is fun, except then you run the risk of buying something you already have! The week before last I bought "Angel" Season 5, and it wasn't until I added it to my DVDSpot database and saw two entries for the set that I remembered I already had it.
