Thus revealed, the creature buried its nose in the tire-tilled soil...

Okay, so since occasionally I post memes and games and such to my otherwise neglected LiveJournal, last week I did a thingy in which I posted miscellaneous non-DVD screencaps and asked readers to guess what media the images were from or make up their own humorous titles a la the faux answers people come up with at trivia nights. Naturally, the real answers proved terribly elusive (one person did get the Japanese Dark Water and another had some pretty funny joke answers), but that was expected. 🙂 Anyway, I'm reposting the screencaps and answers here for fun. How many would you have gotten? Read on to find out!

Steel Angel Kurumi Zero

1. Steel Angel Kurumi Zero, which is an OVA that takes place after the "Steel Angel Kurumi" and "Steel Angel Kurumi 2" animes. The latter two (or former two, chronologically speaking) were released on US DVD, but as far as I know there aren't any plans to release the later OVA. Which is good, because it's really lame. The original "Steel Angel Kurumi" series, however, is quite excellent, and you can generally find the box set featuring the complete first and second series for quite cheap as far as anime sets go. I've been planning to review the entire series (not episode recaps, just a general gloss review) on SC for ages, so hopefully you'll hear more about the show someday. 🙂

X-Men?!?

2. Believe it or not, this screecap is from an episode of "X-Men: The Animated Series". It's from the fifth season, during which the show really started to stink and they hired different artists or something, which gave the show a weird, unpolished coloring book look that was mostly crappy and failed to fit the visual mood established by the previous series' episodes. In the episode depicted above, a bunch of Apocalypse worshippers are looking like scared dipshits.

Dark Water

3. It's a little girl staring into a tub of dark water! I thought that was rather clever. ;D

Ayakashi ~ Classic Japanese Horror

4. This is a screencap from "Ayakashi ~ Classic Japanese Horror", a recent anime series that retells three classic Japanese horror tales. It's quite good.

CUTIE HONEY!!!

5. From the numerous television series to the live action movie to the Re: Cutie Honey OVA from which this screencap was taken, I love me some Cutie Honey. See, her clothes begin to disappear as her energy is depleted, so she has to make a pig of herself after battles in order to keep from being left naked in public. The anime is also funny because her power entails transforming into various outfits that inexplicably alter her abilities -- frex, in order to chase the enemy down, she'll become the motorcycle-riding Hurricane Honey; when posing as a journalist and photographer, she'll become Scoop Honey; etc. -- but each transformation involves her becoming completely naked, much to the enjoyment of anyone who happens to be watching. Battles also frequently involve her clothing being slashed in such a way as to reveal her ample assets. Yeah I'm totally not as perverted as my enjoyment of this show makes me sound. 😐

Amazing Stories

6. This screen comes to us from an episode of "Amazing Stories" starring a shotgun-wielding Miss Bliss and one of the most irritating creatures you will ever see in your life. SC review forthcoming.

Hanaukyo Maid Tai

7. Aaaand the final image is from "Hanaukyo Maid Tai", an anime series from the same folks who brought us "Steel Angel Kurumi" above. This one's about a young boy who inherits a mansion staffed by a 300+ member maid team that consists of sexy women (and, as seen above, one little girl with a split personality) whose mission in life is to serve their master's every need, including holding his penis for him when he urinates and giving him wakeup blowjobs. (None of this stuff is actually shown, by the way -- like Cutie Honey, the show relies more on visual gags and implied perversity than overt sexuality. Hentai this is not.) It's funny 'cause he's just a kid and mostly wants none of it -- and these women can be both relentless and relentlessly annoying -- though he does develop a crush on the reserved head of the maid staff and finds certain maids to be attractive at one time or another. As seen in a recent post, here's a screencapped account of an incident involving young Master Taro's training trip with Konnai, an accomplished swordswoman, judoka, and the maid in charge of security at the mansion. Aaand I'm totally not as perverted as my enjoyment of this show makes me sound. 🙁

Okay, all for now. Stay tuned for more regular and recycled goodness...!

Nice screengrabs from VHS, Wes! What are you using to capture the video and when do we get to see your review of Pryde of the X-Men??

  • Wes says:

Oh, I say non-DVD screencaps because these are mostly from divx/xvid encodes I've downloaded, the exceptions being the Dark Water and "Amazing Stories" pics. Respectively, those were taken from the VCD ($3 in NYC's Chinatown, w00t) and a "good" quality Media Center XP recording. And regarding the program I used, I just hit F5 in Media Player Classic while playing the file. It's quite convenient. 🙂
