Dawson's Creek

Man, I'd forgotten how much I liked this show. It's kinda weird watching it without the commercials, though -- I keep expecting the dancing frog or Nikki Cox to pop out and say something about tonight's sponsors. When DVD-9 discs become the norm, I think they should start making television series DVDs with commercials which, like commentary and subtitles, can be activated via a submenu. Not only would they considerably ramp up the nostalgia factor -- especially if they could get current advertisers to provide their old spots for older shows -- but the advertising revenues could allow companies to sell DVD box sets at significantly lower prices. Why hasn't anyone thought to do this? It's a total win-win.

Does anybody remember that South Park episode when Cartman went back to colonial times and beat that messenger boy to death with a 2x4 while singing the Dawson's Creek theme song? Why the hell was that so funny? I crack up every time I think about it.

And for those of you who've enjoyed our culinary experiments over at Scary-Crayon, there's a new sandwich in town. It's legendary.

DVD-9 discs are already the norm, especially with television box sets. That's how four "hour-long" episodes can be put on a disc in MPEG2 format without loss of video quality. Recordable DVD-9 discs are a somewhat recent advent, but they're still too dodgy to be practical.

So they are! Interesting. I'd always chalked it up to (sometimes quite obvious) compression. Also, I have a few DVDs that for whatever reason are clearly labeled DVD-9, so I'd kind of assumed that anything that didn't explicitly state as much wasn't. Maybe that's only the case with foreign discs? The vast majority of the explicitly marked discs have been Chinatown finds.

That said, the data on these Dawson's Creek DVDs only takes up 7 or so GB, so there's still plenty of room for a few froggy advertisements. 😉

I remember that South Park episode! It was awesome!

Wes, you are the last person on earth I expected to be a DC fan.

  • Wes says:

Well, I definitely wasn't as into it in the later seasons -- I think I stopped watching altogether towards the end of Season 3. But remember that I was pretty much the same age as the characters when DC started airing, so I sort of identified with what they were going through. Sex was hardly the hot topic in my high school it was with these characters, though (or maybe I just wasn't in the know, being a certified social outcast and all). And the show came on after Buffy in those days, so it was a valued part of my personal "must see TV" Tuesday nights. 🙂

  • Wendy says:

I can see that. I watched for the first season and then lost interest after that, but I was quite a bit older than the characters. It always cracked me up how mature they were compared to the high schoolers I knew in real life.

I was going to say what Wendy said. I think I caught it for a while around when Joey and Dawson were first hooking up, but then I lost interest. May have also been that I was older than them.

Never having seen either of those shows, I'll just show you the pome I wrote:

St. Patrick's Day is here!! 🙂

Wes likes Dawson's Creek. My mind just exploded. I liked the show a lot, too, but gave up some time during season 3 or so because I hated the Joey-Pacey thing and wanted their demise. Watched a few episodes here and there, and then watched the last couple of ones and the finale. Season 1 was my favorite. I had the season 1 DVD but it was stolen and I am sad. I'm thinking of buying it again but I might as well just Netflix it. Actually I have them all on tape. WITH FROGGY COMMERCIALS. 😀 Hey, maybe that IS the way to go.

Wow, I echo the surprise that you liked Dawson's Crack. I saw bits in the first season but it had nothing to offer me. I thought of it as "Beverly Hills 90120" in the middle of nowhere. I considered it in the same basket as Backstreet Boys and Titanic. My must-watch in those days was Xena!
