Obviously, this is a recurring battle throughout the series, but this analysis is concerned with the initial conflict between the two. This battle, in my opinion, is definitely one of the more memorable of the Dragonball series for various reasons. For starters, it is the first time we really get to see what Vegeta can do in a combative situation. Likewise, we also get to see how much good Kaiousama's training actually did Goku.

In this battle I believe that Vegeta was actually stronger than Goku. Before the latter put his last resort tactic to excessive use, Vegeta was obviously in control of the battle. Additionally, to overpower Vegeta, not only was Goku forced to use Kaiohken x 3, but it also took most of his power to counter Vegeta's Garlic Gun, yet the Saiya-jin prince seemed unharmed after being hit by the Kamehameha.

This initial battle also gave us more insight into Vegeta's character. His extreme anger at being beaten by Goku, whom he believed to be a low-class fighter, shows the intensity of the Saiya-jin prince's pride. In fact, Vegeta's pride was so great that to avoid losing he would resort to any means possible, even if it meant transforming into an oozaru. Vegeta's pride was also exhibited when he refused to accept his loss and vowed to return, even after he was defeated by the remaining Z warriors.
